Falling out of love with a sport

Posted on November 29, 2025November 29, 2025 by frosi

It’s honestly one of the weirdest feelings when a sport you used to live for just… stops feeling the same. It doesn’t happen all at once it’s little things. Practices feel like a chore, games don’t hit like they used to, and you start wondering why you’re even still doing it.

The hardest part is the guilt. You spent years loving this sport, and suddenly you’re not sure anymore. It feels like you’re letting people down even yourself. But the truth is, you’re not. You’re just changing.

Outgrowing a sport doesn’t mean you failed. It just means you’re making space for new parts of your life. The memories, the lessons, the friendships they still matter, even if the passion isn’t there anymore.

Letting go is scary, but it’s also freeing. It means you’re choosing what actually feels right for you now. And that’s a pretty big part of growing up.

Yeah when playing lacrosse I loved it so much but it eventually became too much for me to balance.

Yes I completely understand when a sport begins to just not align with your life anymore.

True, I can really relate to this. I did cheer for almost half of my life and it was so draining I couldn’t do it anymore.

YES! This is exactly how I felt during the end of my gymnastics career.
